Signs and Symptoms of Adolescent Substance Abuse

§         DROP IN GRADES OR ATTENDANCE – slow or sudden decrease.

§         DIFFERENT FRIENDS

§         EMOTIONAL SWINGS – easily upset, emotions change rapidly, seems to be “flat” or low energy

§         DEFIANCE OF RULES AND EXPECTATIONS

§         BECOMING MORE SECRETIVE

§         LOSS OF INITIATIVE – no interest in things they used to enjoy

§         WITHDRAWING FROM FAMILY – activities, meals, etc.

§         CHANGE IN HYGIENE – clothes, hair, etc.

§         EXCUSES – reasons for lateness, blaming

§         MEMORY – difficulties with short term memory and attention span

§         FURTHER ISOLATION – spends most of their time in their room

§         SUSPICION OF MISSING PROPERTY – money, alcohol, household belongings

§         SELLING POSSESSIONS – clothing, CD’s, gifts

§         PARENTS FEEL MANIPULATED – youth plays parents against each other

§         LEGAL PROBLEMS – driving intoxicated, warnings or tickets from police, etc.

§         COMING HOME DRUNK/HIGH – smells of pot or alcohol, seems unusually happy.

§         FINDING PARAPHERNALIA – cigarette papers, pipes, bottles of marijuna

§         ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR – verbal or physical abuse towards family, etc.

NOTE: One symptom alone does not necessarily mean an alcohol or drug problem exists.  Several of these may indicate a pattern related to alcohol/drug abuse.
